I think the sweet spot for the Ergo is 9-18 months.

I didn't start using a structured carrier until DS was at least 5 or 6 months. For smaller babies I really like a pouch sling. It's quicker for me to get them in/out and seems like a more natural position for a tiny baby.

I'm a big fan of SlingLings, which are only ~$35 full price, and can be used until toddlerhood. A good supplement to the Ergo or other SSC if you need something in between.

My baby is 15 lbs and change at 11 months. She doesn't fit in the Ergo and she screamed bloody murder when I tried. I either use my mei tai (baby hawk) or pikkolo to carry her.

at 6 months, dd was in my ergo. i just folded up one or both legs froggy in the carrier without the insert. at 7 months, both legs are out.
