Colorado Mountains. We're campers so I can't recommend anything specific for you but it will be beautiful and much cooler. RMNP, great sand dunes national monument, rafting.

as citymama suggested i'd do Monterey. has gorgeous beaches but not too hot (nothing compared to Texas heat). we are going there in a couple weeks, cant wait. i'm sure DS will love the aquarium.

Glad you had fun! We did Sandestin when our girls were 3.5. We drove from Austin and also stopped in NOLA. It is a fun place!
