We used something from Lowe's that had no VOC & it was ~$20/gallon (2 years ago).

Sometimes the paints that are less per gallon end up costing more in the long run because you have to use more. Nurseries are usually pretty small anyway so you don't often use too very much. We used aura from Ben Moore and were very pleased with how well it covered, but it is not cheap.

We have a local EcoHome store that sells a lot of brands. We really liked American Pride brand and also used the Sprout (children's) line from the Yolo brand. Both were about $5-10 more per gallon, so that came out to less than $100 more for most of our projects. We also used the Home Depot non-VOC brand and that worked pretty well.

In general we found the texture to be a bit thicker, which meant we used more but it gave a thicker, deeper base. With new primed walls we only needed to do one coat and it's held up well.

Be aware that some places have a non-VOC base then add tints with VOC. That may be better than regular paint, but may still have some smell and odor.

Agreed. I ended up researching all the no VOC brands and Benjamin Moore came up on top. They are no VOC even with color added and the coverage is great. It was about $50 a gallon but we have plenty left and might do DS's room in it too.

We used Dunn-Edwards. From my recollection, they have a line specifically for lo VOC paints and for children's room.

We are considering Mythic Paint, which is no VOC non-toxic. Not sure how it compares cost-wise with other brands, but I think it's worth it for a baby or child's room. Land of Nod sells it on-line and there are paint stores that carry it locally, but not the big box chains.

We used Sherwin Williams Harmony paint and were very happy. It spread easily, covers well, and . Mythic paint per Land of Nod catalog is $44 a gallon so right around the same price as Dunn Edwards (only available in the Southwest though), but not as much as the $57 a gallon for Benjamin Moore Aura. We went with SW based on how much we liked the color. The auto club discount was a nice added bonus too (AAA also offers a discount at Dunn Edwards).

Here's the info I have saved from my search a year and a half ago.

    Zero-VOC paint

    Freshaire Choice
    •at Home Depot
    •$35-$38 per gallon
•no VOCs in base paint or pigments
•Best choice when painting room a non-white color
    •Greenguard certified
    http://www.freshairechoice.com/

    Olympic Premium
    •at Lowe's
•no VOCs in base paint, but added in when pigmented
•Least expensive choice for primer and white paint (pigments contain VOCs)
    •Green Seal certified
    •around $25 per gallon
    http://www.olympic.com/paint/Go_Green/go_green.aspx

We ended up using Olympic brand primer, ceiling paint, and white paint for the doors and trim. We used the Freshaire brand for the actual colored paint.

Here's some info on VOCs and paint:
