Default Recommendations for wooden blocks, please?

I want to add a set of nice wooden blocks for DD's Christmas list. I'm thinking of the classif kind that have a letter on one side, a picture of an animal on the other side etc. I know these will get a lot of play, so I don't want to get something cheapy and have the paint gross and peeling in no time. Any recommendations? TIA!

We also have an Uncle Goose set. I love them - I have used them to spell out all of the months for the first year. We got this set from Amazon:

We received the PBK blocks as a gift when DS was a baby 11 years ago. While pricey for blocks, they look great and are solid quality. All 3 kids loved playing with them over the years.

We got these and they are beautiful and colorful:

It looks like they're no longer available, but I'm pretty sure they're just Uncle Goose blocks made specifically for Land of Nod.

I'd recommend avoiding the Melissa and Doug ABC blocks. They are fairly soft and IMO wouldn't withstand much chewing. Also, they are 1" square and small enough to stuff most of one into a baby's determined mouth! Also irks me that they come in a see-through box twice the size of the set; the rest was filled with foam.

Their unit blocks are awesome though.

    Another fan of Uncle Goose!
