Default How much is too much? (rectal bleeding) TMI ALERT

Sorry, this is totally embarrassing to have to ask...

The short question is--how much blood is too much when it's coming from your butt?

Longer version--I have internal and external hemorrhoids. Generally, they don't give me too much fuss.... If I get constipated, I'll have a little blood on my poop, but otherwise, a little pain when they're "visiting" and that's it. Lately, though, multiple times, it's been more--like turning the water red enough that I wipe multiple times to make sure I'm not getting my period. And it burns like he!! when I wipe--I use super-sensitive baby wipes, and I want to cry when it's time to poop, because it stings so bad to wipe, but regular TP wasn't getting the job done. I haven't been constipated in weeks; my poops are very soft.

So, how much is too much?

That sounds like too much. It sounds like something right on the way out, which you already know is an issue. Maybe it's time to see about getting them fixed?

Blood that is really worrisome is when your stools are black; indicating bleeding further in.

Not sure I can help you much, but you might want to call your doctor for a Rx strength hemorrhoid medicine. DH has all kinds of problems and went to urgent care one night it was so bad. They gave him scripts for extra strength miralax, extra strength cream and stool softener. He said the medicine worked well and fast. Sorry you're in so much pain.

Depending on how old you are, you may want to talk to your doctor about the necessity of getting a colonoscopy. Just to make sure nothing more serious than hemarroids are at play.

Hope you get some relief soon!

    I'd talk to my doc.

I did, recently, in fact. Had a similar problem right after (1) over a week of chronic stomach problems that left my insides really ...um...fragile, followed by (2) constipation that most likely...um...ripped something a little bit.

Doc confirmed that due to those events and my age, it was almost certainly ok. But I'm glad I mentioned it. I almost didn't but I was in for my pap and realized it would be stupid not to ask.

DS had some issues and when we went to the specialist they told us that usually if its bright red it means its typically from a lesion, hemroid, etc. close to where its coming out. DS did sometimes turn a lot of the water in the toilet red when it was at its worst. It was very alarming.

If it continues I'd probably call just to be sure.

With that amount of pain, it's worth getting them checked out. It could be the hemorrohoids or it could be a fissure. Either way, may needs some treatment.
In the meantime, consider getting a peri bottle and squirting water after going to the bathroom, then patting dry.
