DS and DD both saw the dentist for the first time at age 2. Pediatric dentists will see kids younger - even infants.

My friend's pediatric dentist said 1. My dentist who is very family friendly said around 18 months. I know you can't put your hand in his mouth without getting bit at this point so we'll probably wait till close to 2.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll bring you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
Ours went around 12-18 months.
We took DD1 when she was 2.5.
Mama to 3 awesome kids
Our pesiatrician recommended 12 months, so that is when we started. He goes for check ups every 6 months.

DH is an orthodontist and very particular about dental health (e.g., no juice for DDs but for 1-2/year on very special occasions, though i sometimes allow it when DH isn't around and there's nothing else offered like at a birthday party). DDs both went around 15 months to a pediatric dentist, who has had specialized training beyond dental school. I am glad we went early as both girls have deep grooves on their molars and had cavities before age 4, despite flossing daily and brushing twice daily.
