Patagonia outerwears are usually very light, not bulky and super warm (and wash like a dream). I usually buy them at the Patagonia outlet--they're having their big sale right now (about 60% off) and they also take phone orders too. Our boys have the Patagonia Baby puffball reversible jackets, down sweaters, down jackets, synchilla jackets, and puff rider jackets, and we love them all.

Bought my son an LL Bean winter jacket yesterday (Mogul). It's not puffy at all. He was so in love with it that he wore it in the house and playing outside --- it was comfortably high 50s here. He was not too hot from wearing it. But the coat is rated to be comfortable for outdoor play to 15 degrees. I love that versatility.

Another vote for Ll bean. We just got the Glacier summit one. Was looking at the mogul one too.

I love to call the one in Maine. They will send you anything. I have posted about this before, but I love the now discontinued puff rider for bigger kids. I have gotten great deals on it from Maine. Ds1 has worn it for the past two winters and will start off with it again. It is way too short on him now, but it doesn't impede his mobility.
