My DS loves his legos but I am at a loss at how to get it all organized! Anyone had any success at organizing them?
Thanks,
Ann

Depending on how many legos you have (and how much time you have, since this looks pretty involved), I really like this idea - http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com...-creating.html. I've also seen something similar with the bins underneath a play table.
I was at the container store last weekend and they had a lego storage section, with 4-5 different types of containers. This one looked nice for a lot of legos - http://www.containerstore.com/shop?p...t%7C0&Ntt=lego
last yr. in family fun there was a neat idea for storage, it was two of those 3 drawer storage units the ones on wheels. they took a board and layed it across the top and glued the lego plates on it. kindof made it look like a desk that you could slide a chair up to.
We have three of the Ikea Trofast sets as shown on the iheartorganizing blog. It works great for us. My DS wanted them sorted by color and it works for him. We have the deeper bins along the bottom for Hero Factory and sets that are built but not wanted on display. We also have 2 shallow bins just for people.
we have tried a variety of systems. Currently we have the main bricks sorted in a tall scrapbooking organizer (big bricks, thins, skinnys) and then 2 bins of misc stuff and drawers of people, transportation stuff and stuff with stickers.

It's been a hopeless cause now that F is old enough to play with them. Our main issue has been convincing an order loving T who will totally sort and maintain a system not to kill his brother for being 4 and messy.
The best tip I ever got was to have them play with them on a spread out sheet. So when a bin gets dumped, it is way easier to put it all back. Just pick up all 4 corners of the sheet to get 1 big pile again.

My kids are 6 and almost 4 and there is no way that they would maintain any kind of system. We have 3 under bed storage boxes (so shallow and long) that we use so they can see a lot of pieces without having to dig around too much. Sets I want to keep the pieces together (i.e. batcave) I keep in ziplock bags in storage containers in their closet.
We have something like this- but with smaller drawers. Bricks are sorted by color. Then we have a drawer of people, accessories, and wheels. Another drawer of little specialty pieces sorted in small plastic containers. My and 8 year old are not great at maintaining it. In theory- when everything is sorted it is great and so easy to find the pieces they need, but that is pretty rare and only when mom does most of the sorting. We have another bin on top that I scoop all the leftover pieces into occasionally.

"Someday, I am going to go to bed without toys on the floor and sippys in my sink. Things will stay where I put them and I can have nice, fragile items on display. But when I do, I will look around with a wistfullness in my heart and miss the days where vibrant imaginations ran wild and there was evidence of life happening around me all the time!"
We have 2 large Rubbermaid tubs, like the kind you would use in your garage. We originally started with an under bed storage box, but he wasn't able to keep his partially complete projects in it. My boss gave me a big Rubbermaid tub with his sons old Legos, so I went out and got another one from TArget of the same size and color. Works well for us as they stack and the lids don't pop off if the container gets knocked over.
