I stay at hotels at arundel mills about 1x a month for work and have never had a safety concern. I alternate between Awake/Aloft and the Sheraton garden.

If you end up in DC just for the day, park at the reagan building. It's pricey during the week but cheap on weekends. Very secure, super bathrooms, food court and easy in/out. 1350 pennsylvania ave is the gps address for the garage entrance itself.

I've never felt unsafe in Columbia, day or night, but I'm sure it has unsafe areas. However, Arundel Mills is fairly notorious, a women got stabbed there just a month or so ago. I feel pretty comfortable there during the day, although guarded, but it has a whole different ambience at night, and that was true before they added the casino, which tends to bring a rougher crowd to any area. OP, I'd go with the place in Columbia, especially if it has good reviews.

ok, then homewood suites in columbia is the winner!

thanks so much ladies, i've tweaked the agenda and decided that we'll drive from the beach to columbia that saturday morning and spend the day at their pool till it's time to head to the 4:30p Medieval Times show. afterward they can spend more time in the pool before bed. EARLY sunday we'll drive to DC and park at the Reagan Bldg and see some sights and do a bus tour of Arlington Cemetary. if there's time (which i'm doubting) we'll pop into the Natural History museum to see the dinos the homeward bound!

Medieval Times Q: how far in advance do i need to get the tickets? it's at the end of june, do i need to get them now??? can i wait till next month?

I just saw a Living Social (or was it Groupon) deal for Medieval Times - look at their site for either D.C. or Baltimore and see if that would work.

You'll be driving home to Cleveland after a day of sightseeing in DC? That seems like a lot of driving after a busy day. Actually - it seems like a lot of driving period. What beach will you be coming from?

yes, i saw the living social deal, but thanks for mentioning it!

yes, we will be driving to cleveland, it's a 5-6 hr drive, so i'm not too worried about being exhausted as dh and i will both be able to switch off. we drove to siesta key, fl last summer non-stop and left at 8p, so as long as one naps while the other drives we are good.

BUT we aren't doing MT anymore. We will still do DC on the way home, and will decide next month on whether we will be staying and where. I've decided to sign charlie up for a Video Game Making/Computer PRogramming camp that starts on that monday which is his bday. at $200 it's cheaper than the MT tickets, but more fun for him, plus he'll learn some programming skills
