"Normal" airfare from SFO/Oakland/Boston to Hawaii (specifically Kauai?)

We have a choice of two different places to stay:

- Poipu right on the beach
- Princeville with a drive to the beach

We have a 4 and a 2 year old. Which would you choose? Or a little of both?

This will drive the choice of dates, madly trying to make a decision to book

Something to keep in mind in Hawaii in general: In the summer, go north. In the winter, go south. This is based on surf - Hanalei waters will likely be rough at that time, although March is late enough that Poipu might not be super calm either. Anyway, go south in March. And keep in mind that there is a completely enclosed beach on the east side which is safe for little ones year-round, with an awesome playground right by it.

Alaskan air is known to drop to $300 round trip on "off days". We've flown in March for that price. If you get their credit card ($75/yr) you get a $99 round trip airfare for a companion. Not the best deal, but cheap. This is out of the Bay Area, by the way.

Thank you everyone for all the tips and tricks!! We just booked our airfare, staying in Poipu the whole time. We decided to split the trip up, use miles to get to Oakland and just paid for the airfare through Alaska Air to get to Kauai. We are going to spend a few days in San Francisco on either end, seeing friends and doing some sightseeing. So the money saved on airfare will be very worth it.

Can't wait, is it next year yet??!!
