Whoa, should I be letting my 4yo wipe himself? It never even occurred to me... My older son started wiping himself once he went to kindergarten and didn't have anyone doing it for him. I stopped doing it at home, too, but not until then! I didn't want to deal with ickiness. My 4yo always asks to do his own wiping but I cringe at the thought!

I'm not counting truly independent until 4-5 since we still WANTED to wipe him! Like PP said, we chose cleanliness over independence.

He was pee training by 3. Not sure about poo. It's been a long, long time!

DD had to learn once she started preschool. Sometimes, a teacher there would do it for her but most times, she came home with a failed attempt at wiping herself. So, I taught her how to wipe at home. She does a pretty good job with TP and a better job if she has wipes. I still check. I am still amazed how she has never come home with any skid marks ever.

Buy the wipes that can be flushed, it's easier for them to do it on their own. You can start teaching him how to do it now.

But don't flush them. They don't disintegrate. My parents had a large blockage in their sewer line, and the plumbers said to never use those things as they were the biggest cause of blockages they were seeing these days.

ds will be 7 next month & tries to be independent at school, usually with major skidmarks. i wipe him at home because i prefer to know he's clean most of the time. i don't want him getting 'underwear rash'.

Four. Mostly. I help on rare occasions. (With my 7yo too, though.) Typically if they're not feeling well and things aren't happening "normally".

I would say they were mostly reliable with wiping between 4-5. Sometimes they still need help, but 90% of the time, they were/are fine.

DD still struggles occasionally with wiping at 5. She would be happy if we would just do it for her, but we are trying to encourage independence. she gets no help at at school (she has not had help at school since age 3.5), but at home I have her attempt first, and then I will "check and finish up" if she asks me too. She is finally getting much better at it!

I had to let go of all influence when my daughter had a major potty regression, so she's been independent since 3.5 or so. At 5.5 she "forgets" to wipe almost every day. Her undies almost always have skids and she gets rashy bum a lot. I try to remember to remind her to wipe and praise the clean undies at the end of the day. I hope she doesn't get a UTI. I had one recently (I wipe!!! I swear i do!!!) and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
