Default Difference between size 5T and 5?

Trying to buy some clothes for DD for next year. She is a petite girl and has always been on size depending on her age. Currently 4T is too big for her (in pants). Should I go for 5T next year?

In general the difference between 5 and 5T is that 5T usually is bigger in the bum to accommodate a diaper. If your DD is pt'd or close I would probably do 5 for next year.

Once you switch to girls sizing, you can also find slims which can be helpful for petite girls. 5 slim may fit her better if you mean the 4T is too big in the waist and bum area. Just like women's sizing though, there's not always a great deal of consistency in sizing across brands.

5T shirts and dresses are noticeably smaller in waist and arm length.
5T pants are a little shorter and tighter, with elastic waist.
My skinny DD is almost 6 but can't wear size 5 pants, except leggings.
Currently I have her wearing 5T boys pants which are somewhere in between 5T girls and 5 girls.

5T is definitely cheaper than 5.
5T styles are the same as 2T, while 5 styles are the same styles as you'll see for age 10.

In the case of boys, I've found that it really varies from store to store, like at Kohl's for example, they have 2T-4T, then 4, 5/6, 7 in boys. The differences between 4T and 4 are HUGE. the 4s are much much longer. They are not the same size at all. At 5 DS wears 4s from there. Same almost exactly with Lands' End. 4T, and 4 are not the same at all. 4s fit a much taller boy.

I've never noticed extra room in the bum for a diaper (I think most manufacturers make clothes for the majority, and the majority of 5 year olds are PTd). DDs wear 5T because they're skinny, and because 5Ts are cheaper. Especially at Baby Gap. Regular size 5 pants/skirts are too big in the waist for them, and dresses look baggy.
