Default Compact, easy to use wrap for newborn and toddler

I have and really like my Beco Gemini and K'tan. With us expecting #3, I'd like to get something small and compact that won't take up so much space in my diaper bag. It would be great if it would work for my son on my hip or the newborn. I know about the Boba Air and Bity Bean but I'm more interested in a wrap type thing because my son hates carriers and maybe he would go for something different. Compact is my main criteria. I'm not familiar with wraps and slings so thought I should ask. SSCs I know more about!

Both a wrap and a ring sling will have a bit of a learning curve to them, but a thinner, gauze wrap would probably be as packable as a ring-sling.

I'll suggest the Wrapsody Stretch Hybrid wrap: http://www.quirkybaby.com/wrapsody-s...rid-wraps.html

It's similar to something like the Moby or Boba wrap, but it only has a little bit of stretch so it's going to have a bit more life in it and you would be able to use it with a heavier baby.

Since it's got more in common with a woven wrap than a stretchy, you can also tie it in a variety of hip carries:

    Robin's Hip Carry - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AhYqRsXEU0
    Hip Cross-Carry - http://www.wrapyourbaby.com/hipcrosscarry.html

    Among others.

Another advantage of the Wrapsody Hybrid is you can do back carries with it, unlike a true stretchy, so you have more options with a fussy older kid who wants to see things.

If you need more information, The Babywearer has a listing of regional groups that might help you test run a variety of carriers before you make the commitment to one or another.

    HTH!

Have you thought about getting a stuff sack for your carrier(s)? I have one for my Boba and love it. It makes it more compact and it has a handle on it, so I can attach it to the outside of my diaper bag using one of its buckles. Just a thought, since you already have carriers you love!

ETA: Oops, I misread your post! Your son doesn't like the carriers, but you do -- sorry I missed that part!

Oh, and one more thing, you can get after-market sling rings from companies like SlingRings (http://www.slingrings.com/products.php) to turn a shorter wrap into a ring sling if that's what you find you prefer.

Just be sure that they are meant to be used as ring sling rings; you may pay less at a craft or fabric store, but they may not be intended to bear the same sort of weight as rings made specifically for slings, so they could present a safety issue.

Update - I decided to try a linen ring sling and got one from Sleeping Baby Productions. I liked that it was different from the Beco and K'Tan that I already have. I ended up feeling like the carrier being really compact and also easy to take on and off was what I really needed. Plus, although I liked wraps, I live in Texas and lots of fabric just makes me WAY too hot in the summer. I tried it out last night and liked it but I need to practice more!

Yes, the multi-passes of a wrap will be hot no matter how lightweight the fabric is!

Anyway, in case you hadn't seen any, here's a list of Ring Sling videos from Babywearing International:
