Default home VHS made to DVDS?

Has anyone done this? I have about 15 VHS of family home movies from my childhood that I would like to make into DVDs for my dad, for his birthday. But yikes, it seems so expensive. Costco is 17.99 for every 2 hours. i'm not sure how long my VHS tapes are, but i think they could be 6 or 8 hours each. thats about $810, without tax. surely there is a better way to go about this? any BTDT experience or suggestions?

search on groupon and the other daily deal sites. I see them pop up fairly often for much cheaper than Costco. Sometimes it is a local company, othertimes by mail. I have also done one batch through Ebay. We were actually doing old 8mm film, but the concept and pricing is similar.
