I love Vegas! Fun (indoors is always air conditioned), tons of good restaurants, nice hotels, etc. i would totally suggest Vegas too, but the distance from NY might be too much.

The flight time is offset by the time change. You arrive at almost the time you left. Now, you have to muscle past normal bedtime.

I lived in Ottawa for 30 years, and go home every summer, and most summers I'm faced with 90 degrees and humidity, and unfortunately some folks don't like to turn on the a/c....I live in central IL and find that Canadian summers in July and early August can be as brutal as the midwest, but that's just my experience, I know a lot of folks don't find Canadian summer as bad which is why I posted.

New Orleans in July sounds like a bad idea - it will be so hot and muggy. Better to go there in the shoulder seasons sometime. Asheville isn't usually hot - I was there twice last August and one time it was lovely and the other time it was actually cooler than I would have liked. If you want to stay closer to home how about visiting one of the towns in the finger lakes (we stayed in a charming inn on Cazenovia Lake once for my cousin's wedding) and staying at a nice B&B? Or going up to Clayton and doing the St. Lawrence area?

I'm the one who brought up the weather, not OP I'm definitely a weather wimp so I plan my vacations accordingly when I can.
We went to Montreal and Quebec in July and found it very pleasant. I don't know if that was a fluke.

I think PPs are right that Asheville will be fine. I do remember being very hot at Biltmore Gardens, however. I don't think that would stop me from going!

I'm not sure if it's too far, but a trip to Napa or Sonoma with adults only is always nice.If you went midweek it might not be too busy.

Oregon coast. It can be pretty busy in summer but it is beautiful and cool. You can hang out at the beaches or visit lighthouses, aquariums, the redwood forest if you're in southern Oregon. There are wineries, cheese factories, antique stores, etc...
