Default Are mothers (today) spending too much on baby needs?

What's your take on the matter?

    Whatever happened to baby basics?

There are more choices nowadays but still basics.

If one can afford it, then I don’t think it is too much. I’m not sure what you are thinking about, but a lot of products are meant to make things easier on the parents and aren’t necessarily basics. If some parent finds a product helps them out in some way, more power to them for using it. There are a lot of products I found silly or were’t useful to me personally, but which other mothers or posters said they loved.

I am willing to spend a lot of it makes my life easier. My babies have all been difficult: colicky, refluxy, high needs, low sleep. So I spent more on items that help with convenience, comfort, sleep, and time management for me. There are things out there that I think are absurd (super expensive designer baby clothing) but a lot of things aren't necessities but still could be worthwhile.

I don't think it's my business what other people spend on their children.

What's your definition of "baby basics?" A stroller that is awful on urban sidewalks or in three inches of snow? Car seats? I think you need to provide some context for your question.

It's also super easy to dismiss what other people have and say you didn't need it so are better for it. However, had these things been available and in your budget, I'm dubious that you would wouldn't have wanted them too. Maybe not all but I bet there'd have been at least one "frivolous" thing you'd have bought.

It's also super easy to dismiss something you never tried. I internally rolled my eyes about bibs with sleeves--we didn't use them with our first and we were fine--and then my SIL sent me a bib with sleeves for our second. Turns out, bibs with sleeves are awesome!!! And I kick myself for all that extra laundry I did with my first!

I think a lot of "frivolous" baby products are like that; that said, it's really none of my business what other people do!

Me exactly! I think people worry way too much about what others are doing.
