Default Suggestions for renting an apartment in London

I am planning a trip to London in July for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 kids, ages 8 and 11). The hotels are looking too expensive and the rooms look small. I'm thinking of renting an apartment for 1 week and have looked into VRBO. Dh is leery of renting an apartment as we don't really know the areas. We've never been to London. We'd like something that is close to come of the popular tourist attractions and also close to transportation - either bus stop or the underground/tube. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, we would appreciate it very much.

We hope to get to Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, London Eye, Shakespeare's Globe, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, St. Paul Cathedral. And if time permits, we hope to watch a family friendly show/play.

    TIA!

We went to London about 4.5 years ago (time has flown by!) with our then 2 and 4 year olds. Anyhow we rented from this company, their Curzon Street property: http://www.holidayapartments.co.uk/a...nd-links1.html but you might find a different apartment more suitable. It was a great location, very close to the tube and walkable to a bunch of stuff. For us apartments were a must in Europe because our little kids went to bed much earlier than us. We could buy breakfast food and have in the apartment too which made for much nicer and easier mornings.
We rented from VRBO all over Europe and never had a problem. If you pick a place that has reviews there is really nothing to worry about. Most of VRBO in the big European tourist cities are run by companies anyhow.

There is also this place, that I've heard about but not stayed in: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...n_England.html used to be called "base2stay" and they have family suites.

we rented one on VRBO right on the river. Walking to many places. Will try to dig up the link.

Looks like the place isn't available anymore. Here is some detail

St George Wharf was a good location for us and there were other places renting there when we were looking.

I LOVE London!! I try to get there whenever I can. We usually stay near Marble Arch station, but most of the Westminster area should work out fine. Great area--easy public transport options, shopping, tons of restaurants and the park is nearby (check out the Princess Diana memorial playground!). Feel free to PM me if there is anything else you want to know that I might be able to help with. We have only done hotels though, so I don't have a specific apartment rental suggestion.

We rented a flat in the Chelsea area through http://www.onefinestay.com and we really liked the area - we were only a five minute walk to the Tube!

I would also suggest looking on booking.com and perhaps even bedandbreakfast.com
