As an Anne fanatic, of course I had to visit Green Gables, the site of L.M.M.'s home, and the White Sands Hotel. Really, though, the Anne commercialism is the least pleasant part of PEI. The nature there is just beautiful! The red cliffs and the blue sea are lovely, and the ocean water is oddly much warmer than in the northeast of the US. It felt more like Virginia/Carolina water. I do like the North Shore, and that's probably where I'd rent my house.
The Eastern coast is really interesting, though. We did a seal watch that was wonderful. If you like to bike, the Confederation Trail is fantastic! The west side of the island has some pretty funky attractions. I think we saw a house made entirely of bottles! That area was also where the big supermarket was.
What kind of vacation are you looking for? I'd send away now for the PEI tourist guides. They're very good and quite thorough.
