Default Lead crystal safe for children?

I have some beautiful pieces of crystal that I'd love to start to use for dinners with our children (5,7 and 9). Is it safe to serve them beverages from the glasses and dessert from the dessert bowls?
The lead part in "lead crystal" gives me pause.

According to the FDA lead crystal can leach lead into liquids stored in lead crystal over time but it is considered safe to use lead crystal for special occasions. Its not recommended for daily use or use by pregnant women.

This is pretty old, from 2003, so I would probably err even more on the side of caution than recommended here: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/19/sc...-a-945129.html

It gives me pause to think of some of the ceramics we have eaten off, bought in Mexico and Turkey.
