Default Birthday Gift Ideas for 4 and 5 year old boys and girls

The Biscuit's class at school totals about 16 kids ranging from newly 3 up to 5 (and by next August some of the kids will be closer to 6 and about to start kindergarten). We are starting to get birthday invites from some of the older kids, but I have no idea what to buy.

Any suggestions? I note that my normal go-to in that age range usually is stomp rockets, but some of the kids live in apartments or small houses with minimal yards, so the rockets probably would not be a good idea for them. Bonus points if the gift is not "branded" (Disney, Thomas, etc.) as our school leans more to the anti-commercial.

These all are good ideas, thanks! Would Shrinky Dinks count as art supplies/crafts?

I think a 5 year old girl would love shrinky dinks.
