We don't face your level of dysfunction, but I feel for you and I do grieve for what we/my kids/my Dh are missing in not having a family that stands together. Sometimes I am so jealous of people who have great families.

My DH grew up in a small family far away from any living relatives. They went the route of finding friends who became like family - sharing holidays, exchanging gifts, going on vacations. I used to joke that DH called anyone he ever met "aunt" or "uncle" but now I see what a great thing it was that his parents found these other people who became like family to him.
