I had deicer after the first incident of my car door freezing shut (in college, in Nebraska). The first time I used hot salt water to unfreeze my door. I was told to use the salt so it didn't immediately refreeze. But I lived in Chicago for 4 years after that and always parked outside and I don't think my doors ever froze shut.

Well, considering that most of the country is under a deep freeze now, she could live just about anywhere! Use EXTEREME caution pouring hot water on the car doors to open them. The first winter I moved from FL, this happened and I oh so smugly did this a bunch of times and screwed up something in the window mechanism. .... and cracked the windshield. I was using water from the boiling water tap but still.

fwiw, I also discovered that if you spill a bowl of cereal and the milk immediately freezes, shrugging your shoulders and deciding to deal with it when it thaws is NOT the way to go.
