Default Eating fish -- how often and what kinds?

How often does your family eat fish (when cooking at home)? What types of fish do you eat? Where do you buy your fish?

I'm really making an effort to serve fish more often. I usually just buy and serve Swai (kind of like tilapia, if you haven't heard of it) in large frozen packages from my grocery store, but I'm looking to branch out since I'm trying to serve it more often. I'm unfortunately not a fan of salmon, which along with tilapia seems to be the most common fish, but I'm looking for ideas of what types of fish people enjoy and where they find reasonable prices on it.

I'm not a fan of fish. If I were buying though, there's a very popular fish monger that of go to or I'd go to Whole Foods. Their fish always looks good.

We eat fish or shellfish 2-3 times a week. As for fish, my family likes salmon, tuna, trout, flounder, catfish, pretty much whatever I buy. I try to buy wild caught fresh fish. I usually shop at Wegmans. Fish is the only thing all 3 of my kids will eat without complaining no matter how I prepare it.

We eat fish probably once or twice a week. The whole family likes Costco's tortilla-crusted tilapia from the freezer section. Like you, DH isn't a huge fan of salmon, but I also like their salmon with pesto butter.

Fish tacos are another favorite. I've made them with everything from fresh walleye that DH has caught to frozen fish sticks in a pinch. This is a great recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/53729/fish-tacos/

DH and I also like nicoise salads with olive oil-packed tuna. http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-sala...-kitchn-190232

Our grocery store has a very good seafood counter, as does our local health food store. Some evenings I will browse and just pick whatever looks best.

This is us exactly. Both of my boys will eat salmon, cod, flounder and mussels anytime easily without arguments.

I usually do my big grocery run at Wegmans every Monday morning and get fresh fish for dinner that evening. I usually prepare the fish with just fresh ginger/orange juice marinade or lemon/mustard marinade over jasmine rice with vegetables. I do another smaller grocery run Thursdays and that's our fresh fish night as well, and usually keep a bag of frozen fish in freezer for our fish taco nights another evening. The boys favorite fish is usually salmon, as is mine. dH would eat it but it isn't his favorite though.

Once a week or every other week. Usually tilapia or salmon. We buy Wegman's frozen and either grill it or broil it. We occasionally do shrimp.

We eat fish or shellfish once a week on Fridays because I grocery shop on Thursday and can buy fresh fish. We're pretty limited to Mahi Mahi, tilapia, salmon, tuna, shrimp, and scallops because I hate flounder or mushy type fish. Tilapia and sometimes shrimp I buy frozen and others I go to a fish market. Once of my kids does not like shrimp so I have to adjust for that. For instance, when I make a lower carb shrimp chowder, I have to do half shrimp and half Mahi Mahi or tilapia.

(eta: a lot of the fish I buy is previously frozen and then thawed, not fresh. It's just not the big bags of frozen fish like I buy for tilapia. I've gotten yucky salmon out of those so I prefer to go to the fish market for those items)

We eat fish at least once a week. Unfortunately, we live in an area where it's very hard to get good fresh fish. The closest place with a very good fish counter is over 30 minutes away. I think almost everything at our fish counter has been previously frozen, so I've started just buying frozen fish, defrosting it myself, and cutting out the middle man! We eat all kinds of white fishes: tilapia, cod, flounder, trout and lots of sockeye salmon. We also occasionally have tuna, swordfish, and other steak-like fishes, but only when I can get them fresh from the good fish place. We also eat shrimp fairly regularly. I buy those raw and frozen, too.

With white fishes, I often do an easy prep of a thin coating of mayonnaise, Mrs. Dash garlic and herb flavor, and Parmesan cheese cooked at 425 for 9-12 minutes. That prep can use different herb flavors, just cheese, or leave off the cheese. I also steam fish in packets with fresh veggies and a bit of butter and lemon. Salmon is fantastic poached in white wine with a bit of butter and lemon. It's good with teriyaki sauce, too, for a different flavor. My sister makes a fantastic wasabi mayonnaise for salmon, but my kids won't eat that, so I never make it. If you like mustard (which I don't) that can be a good flavor for fish.

My family is obsessed with that tilapia. I'm going to have try the salmon.

OP, have you ever tried Chinook (also called King) salmon? It tends to be more expensive, but worth it IMO. My DH much prefers it to other varieties of salmon. It kind of melts in your mouth.

We like salmon burgers made with canned salmon. I don't really follow a recipe, but there are a ton online.

I sometimes make homemade fish sticks out of cod. Cod is also nice in a chowder.

We also eat a lot of shrimp. I like it because it defrosts in minutes under running water so it makes a nice last-minute dinner. This is a frequently requested recipe for birthday dinners and other special occasions (but it's actually quite easy to make).

We usually have fish once a week at least. The frozen marinated salmon from Costco was always one of my go to quick meals, but the marinade has soybean oil so DS1 can't have it any more. It's so good with the TJ's spicy tartar sauce! I also do salmon cakes with canned TJ's salmon (boneless one), fish tacos with frozen cod or sole, and tilapia. My kids love shellfish as well, but I don't so I never make at home. I will buy the TJ's frozen cioppino sometimes for them as an emergency meal and they like that too. It has fish and shellfish in a tomato base. My kids like calamari too. Tuna steaks are good too. I had a really good almond crusted tilapia recipe that I used to make, but now DS1 can't have nuts! So now it's just parmesan crusted.
