organizing photos / vidoes

I have eight years of kid pics / videos that I need to organize. Does anyone have any tips / tricks? BTDT? I would love to be able to turn on my computer and be able to pull up exactly what I'm looking for but that's not possible right now. I have been slowly working on organizing the photos but haven't touched the videos. The videos defaulted to the date of download which doesn't correspond to the actual dates. Anyone have a favorite program to sort and store video clips? TIA

I don't know (same situation, but 3 kids/9.5 years!) but I would gladly pay $1-2K for it to be done for me. The task just seems unmanageable.
