I like Boden for work and church, but for most events especially where I might end up wearing the same dress to events with the same people (mainly family weddings or fundraisers) then I like Rent the Runway. I have rented a few dresses from RTR that have been a mini length when they have been described as mid thigh length so it does depend on the fit.
I have also had good luck with Talbots, Nordstrom Rack, Ann Taylor Loft (for more casual) and JC Penney; Lands End usually ends up being kind of baggy unless it is a wrap dress. I had much better luck at Ann Taylor and Banana Republic when I was nice size 8-10 pre kids, now I am size 12 or 14 and I feel like nothing fits or I will need the tightest Spanx possible to make it look half way appealing.
I honestly hate wearing my work wardrobe on the weekends so that is one nice thing about Rent the Runway. I have rented a few dresses that I would love to buy though if they ever went on sale.

Rent the Runway has become my go to for dresses! I've had such great experiences every time.
I've never used Rent the Runway - going to check it out!
Bloomingdales, Saks or Neiman and think they are all still ebates. Nordstrom sale coming up too.

I've gotten a couple cute dresses from Modcloth. It's hit or miss quality wise, but you can kind of tell based on the price. And if Boden is too long, modcloth probably isn't there are a lot of dresses on there I rule out b/c they look too short to me. You can see pic of people wearing them to get a sense of what they really look like (similar to RTR).
