In some areas, nurse practitioners (or certified nurse midwives) can set up independent practices without an affiliation with an MD or DO.

Anyway, who are your GPs? Do you know if they actually use that term to describe themselves?

Getting back to the original question, I know that family physicians are trained to do annual exams, Paps, etc. and include this in their practice. Internists probably also get similar training but in many places, they prefer not to do this.

Another one who's probably using the wrong terminology. I see an NP at a Family Practice. There are doctors on staff if she feels that I need to be seen by someone else, but my NP at the family practice is willing to do all the GYN stuff if I want her to.

Yes GP General Practice or FP Family practice is the same thing here. I'm a one stop doc shop now. I saw a GYN last year to do my novasure ( ablation ) but wasn't thrilled with her so I'm sticking with my Family Dr.

I use my gp. I use that term because the office is a mix of family practice and internists. Mine is technically a D.o.

My gp handles my basic gyn care. She will refer me to a specialist if something comes up, but I really don't need specialty care at this stage in my life.

OP here. I did ask my GP (general practice) doctor, and they do general/annual stuff, but I'm having issues that are beyond their scope.

I did get an appointment - an "urgent" appointment - for Sept 6th. Otherwise, the closest office is scheduling annuals for December right now. Isn't that crazy?

Anyone know a GYN who wants to move out here? They could pretty much hang a shingle and fill their schedule for months. (Northwest Washington state)

Thank you everyone for your commiseration!
