DH lived in DC for 3 years, I used to see a friend there frequently when I lived in Philly, we have taken the kids twice. We have seen all the major mid-Atlantic cities and most of the ones on the west coast. What we haven't seen is the South so that's why I thought of the places on my list.

I am going to check out the Atlanta day trips list. I think I am leaning in that direction. Then I have to think of what place to stay and wonder if I can find a VRBO....hmmm

Have you done Charleston or savannah? I would pick either over Atlanta. Nashville really fits your categories. There is so much to do in and around Nashville. We have never been but my in laws have a bunch of times. I really want to go.

Are Charleston and Savannah more house/garden tour type places? I shied away from them because that was my impression, but I could easily/certainly be wrong.

Charleston in particular has that but also so much more. Lots of history. Amazing food. Great places to bike. Islands to visit. Old plantations. It is an awesome place to visit.

Asheville, NC would match a lot of what you're looking for.

Nashville is a good choice. Maybe 2 overnights in Memphis; they're just 3 hours apart. Nashville would be my preferred home base of the two.
Savannah didn't really hold our interest, tbh.
I'd always put NYC on the table.
I still think Charlottesville + DC is good- fun to explore without kids!

I really wouldn't pick any of those destinations. Maybe Austin but not Atlanta, Memphis or San Antonio (very disappointed in this location and the River Walk was sweaty, wall to wall tourists). I would venture west to San Francisco, Monterey, Napa.

Hanna--we have been to all of those places. We loved New Orleams but were just there.

Charleston and Savannah are nice but very similar. You could do Charleston/Kiawah or Savannah/Hilton Head. I prefer the first pairing because Charleston has a little more going on, and Kiawah is a bit more undeveloped than Hilton Head. Both islands have tons of bike paths, and you will get off season rates with a lot of condo options at the beach resorts. It will still be beach weather though.
