Default keep or toss - canned Libby's pumpkin

I am planning on making pumpkin chocolate chip bread for Thanksgiving and went to find ingredients in my pantry and realized that the Libby's canned pumpkin I have is marked best used by April 2017. Would you still use it? Its the 100% pure, no preservative kind. I haven't opened it yet to see if it smells or looks off.

I feel like it’d be fine. I’d open it and smell it.

If the can's not bulging, I would use it without hesitation.

Best by is totally flexible. That’d be a big waste if you tossed it. It’s not “expired” and even if it was, if no bulge plus look and smell fine, I’d use.

Thanks everyone. Normally I'm not too picky on dates but since I'm making it for others I was a bit uncertain. I actually have 3 cans with that best use by date, any other great pumpkin recipes you want to share (besides pumpkin pie)?

I do a variation from comment section. Use the whole can of pumpkin and half the butter

Eta. I just used pumpkin from that date a few weeks ago with no issues

I like to just mix pumpkin into vanilla yogurt and add some cinnamon. Also good in oatmeal with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.

I would not serve it to others. Some people, like my DH, have to be extra careful with food safety due to medical conditions.

But a Best By date doesn’t refer to food safety.
“A "Best if Used By/Before" indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. “

“"Best if used by (or before)" date. This refers strictly to quality, not safety. This date is recommended for best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. Sour cream, for instance, is already sour, but can have a zippier, fresh taste when freshly sour (if that's not an oxymoron!)”
