    Default Hair loss??

I noticed over past few days the center part in my hair is very noticeable.

I can see the skin when I bend down and see it via a mirror. Also whenever I shower, my hair falls out too. As well whenever I brush my hair too.

No idea where to start to investigate? Ask my doctor for what tests and just say I’m having excessive hair loss.

Ask to get your ferritin (iron stores) levels checked and a "full thyroid panel with antibodies."

Low ferritin and hypothyroidism can cause hair loss. Low ferritin is an even more common cause of hair loss than low thyroid. Ferritin levels under 50 can cause hair loss. Do you have heavy periods or are you vegetarian/vegan? Low ferritin is common in these cases and ferritin is usually never tested unless you ask. After lots of research I learned that ideal ferritin levels in a menstruating woman is 70-90. Mine was 8 when I first got tested and was having other symptoms of low iron-- extremely tired, yawning during exercise, always freezing, pica, napping daily, and shortness of breath. It took 2 years of hardcore prescription iron supplements (plus fibroid surgery) to get my level up to 70, but it quickly dropped after stopping my iron supplements for 3 months (because they were so expensive). I'm hoping to have iron infusions next instead of dealing with supplements.

I have PCOS and often have trouble with hair loss. I take biotin capsules every day, which helps tremendously. I take 10,000 mcg daily.

Hair loss can also be a side effect of a number of medications. If you’ve started any new meds recently, check with your health care provider to see if this may be related. (Probably also true if you’ve started any new supplements etc)

I have experienced pretty severe hair loss twice over the past 15 months. It's slowing down now from the second round, I think. I keep meaning to go and tell my doc, but haven't yet.

But what I do think caused the first round was going off the pill after being on it for many many years. I went off it in March 2016, and started losing hair maybe mid-summer? I have a ton of hair, but there was a lot of hair coming out every shower, and I'd just put my hands through and there would always be hair. It was just like after having a baby. Because I have a lot of hair, so plenty of room to lose hair it wasn't noticeable until the fall, but I couldn't believe the thinning out. But then it stopped, as happens when you have post-pill hair-loss, and it grew back. Lots of short hairs on top and around my temples, and it was very curly in weird places...

I think the most recent hair loss was probably due to the stress of the sudden sickness and then death of my father-in-law this summer. It was extremely stressful, and that can also cause hair loss. I think that is slowing down now, and don't think this was as severe.

That said, I do think going to the doc is a good idea. I did start taking biotin, and I think it's helping, but not sure.

That was my thought too. I did have low ferritin in the immediate months after each birth of my boys. I remember my numbers were around 20-25 which is low, but that was 4 years ago. I just had my physical in March and my doctor ran the numbers again to stay on top of it. It was back up in the 82 range. Ugh! But same time my periods have always been heavy. Usually the first 2 days out of my 6 day cycle, however ever since I hit 40 it just felt heavier. Even back then with my low numbers, I never had this severe hair loss like I’m having now.

Which is why the theory of low ferritin didn’t hit me until you brought it up. Guess I’ll call my doctor to get full panel of my blood work. I hope not though cuz if I recall it took me a good 15 months to get up from 20 to 85! 🤣

Is the widened part just on the top of you head or is it consistently wide on the top and back of your head? If it is wider on top than the posterior scalp, it usually indicates female androgenic alopecia. There are oral meds you can use off label if you are post child bearing years.

If it is generalized, check vitamin D and ferritin. Thyroid problems are more likely to change the texture of your hair rather then the number of hairs.

It’s mostly just on top of my head. Although the hair at the back feels bit thinner than I’m normally used feeling. Thanks for the tip, will put a call to my doctor on Monday and see from there.

I’m currently struggling with the same issue...the dermatologist just dismissed it as genetic hair loss but that’s hard for me to swallow since I’m only mid 30s and the loss is severe.

Others have already suggested the top 3 things to test - ferritin, thyroid (full panel), vitamin D.
It can definitely be stress but that’s so hard to pinpoint...are moms ever without stress

This made me pause...I’ve had extreme low levels of ferritin (I’ve had a ferritin of 1 before), and I’ve had gradually thinning hair for the last 20 years (I’m in my mid 30s), but none of that compares to how severe my current hair loss is, and my ferritin is perfectly fine right now (over 100). I didn’t even realize that till you said that.

Get your labs checked, and I hope you find an easy answer!

Can you elaborate please? Any specific medication names?
