Has anyone stayed there recently? We are planning a family trip in April and was wondering about your experiences there (or at other St. Pete Beach hotels).

It's OK, I haven't stayed there, but it's in a really congested part of the strip. The on site mini aquarium is neat. Have you looked at some vrbo condos?
We are staying on Treasure island in two weeks, a little further down from there. Where we stay is a little old school motel, cheap, clean and safe with a huge possibility, fishing dock but it's probably not up to most people's standards (it's in a 80's time warp).
Lots of fun places to eat and explore in St. Pete . I love Pass-A-Grille, but the traffic in and out of that end is terrible as they have a bunch of streets torn up. Friends also love Indian Shores or is it Indian Rocks closer to Clearwater.
