Second the idea of Kinderhotels, or the like, for a portion of your trip. Like a farm stay, but more luxurious. Not inexpensive, but a very good option for young families. I looked into Centerparcs as well, but they were a bit too large for my taste.

Our first Europe trip with the kids was a Mediterranean cruise with an extended stay in Rome. We chose a hotel with a pool that was up,the hill from Rome, so more of a trip down every day, but they got to relax at the pool half the day which was great since it was HOT. The cruise was great for my youngest, he’s kind of challenging.

We did Scandinavia last year and the kids loved that. Sweden and Norway especially. It’s cooler, so no pool but we went to parks, ice cream is really popular in Sweden in particular. We did a Viking excursion, Tivoli in Copenhagen, lots of kid friendly things to do.

This year we are taking them to Greece and we have some beach time built in.
