Default Bike for a 10 year old?

I ran over DS’s bike a couple of weeks ago. It wasn’t anybody’s fault. He had put it away, but there was an incident.... Anyway, he’s been riding my bike, but his birthday is coming up, and my mom is eager to get him a new bike for his birthday, which means the budget is decent. We’ve been using quality hand-me-downs, so I haven’t done any research. What’s a good bike for a 10 year old who’s about 53” tall? His destroyed bike was a 20”, but he’s been riding mine. I don’t know how big mine is, but I’m 5’2”. Any suggestions?

We have always bought Specialized Hot Rocks, first second hand, and then DS1 got a new 24" for his birthday this year. He is 51" tall. It is a great bike!

My kids ride Specialized or Trek bikes; some bought new and some second hand. Both are quality brands that hold up nicely and have good resale value. My 9 year old just inherited his older brother's 24" Trek this past summer. He's ~54" tall now.

Sounds like he may be able to ride an adult XS or S. My DD got a Specialized Hardrock (now the model is called Pitch) from a bike shop in 5th grade. She got a size small.

My 9 year old has a Giant. I think specialized, trek, and giant are all good brands.

We also really like Specialized bikes. We bought one new and one used and both have held up really well.

Our local bike store buys these three based on price. They like them the best for kids but say to look for best price.
