The second one is better (it would depend how it fits, if it's below the knee it wouldn't be my choice), but honestly I think there are so many better options, I'm not really a Boden fan either. What type of dresses are you comfy in, do you have great legs, curves? For an evening holiday party you can go a little more fun/sassy and still be appropriate. I'm on mobile but I'd check out Macy's for some great party dresses.
