Default update on my DD & selective mutism

Such a good update! I’m so glad you got her the help she needs.

I’m a school SLP and I’ve had parents/teachers/admin insist only I see a child with selective mutism. It’s not a speech or language disorder and I don’t have the training to deal with the underlying anxiety. I can be part of the team, but the child needs to see a mental health specialist to make progress.

I agree with insisting on a 504 plan. More legal protections.

    What a great update!

I have a little girl in my class (first grade), and she has SM. Starting about half way through the year she would say a few things to me very quietly in a one on one situation, but she never asks questions or participates in discussion in class, nor will she talk with subs, aides, other adults. She talks a little bit to a few of the girls in my class. Mom always says she talks non stop at home. A few weeks ago we had parent teacher conferences. Mom and I were sitting a a table, and this little girl and her sister were on my carpet playing with legos. She was talking non stop with her sister. I heard her say more words in those 15 minutes than I have all year!

Wonderful update! I’m so glad you found a therapist who is a great fit for you, your DD, and your family and who is offering feasible, real-world solutions. Hugs!
