Default Appetizer Ideas for Asian Themed Meal

My niece will soon be leaving to serve as a missionary for our church and will serve in Japan. We’re holding a dinner in her honor and she’s requested Asian cuisine. I’ve been tasked with providing appetizers to serve while the rest of the meal is being prepared. What should I serve?

While I love Asian food I’m not very familiar with cooking it. My SIL and niece aren’t sticklers for the theme but I thought I’d put this out there to see if anyone has easy ideas. Part of why I’m bringing appetizers is because there will be a long break between when we get home from Church and our meal. I need something my kids will eat.

    So... any ideas?

Trader Joe’s has great potstickers and other Asian appetizers in their frozen section.

I’d order some appetizers from a takeout Chinese restaurant! Or other Asian cuisine if you have others. Egg rolls, pot stickers, bbq pork, roast duck that is amazing can be purchased fresh, delicious, warm and ready to go in our international district for takeout. Miso soup, cucumber and avocado rolls, or California rolls for easy appetizers.

Yes! Trader Joe’s has all different types of gyoza plus bags of edamame in the frozen section. You could also get Asian rice cracker mix (also at Trader Joe’s).

Trader Joe’s is totally my jam. That sounds perfect.

I’m wondering if my kids will eat that stuff? Should I add some regular snacks—kid friendly stuff to the mix too? I’m thinking some kind of raw veggie (my kids prefer those) or fruit? (I don’t think most of my kids will eat edamame)

All my kids love edamame. It’s very kid-friendly. Plain with some salt. My 5 year old loves those Asian rice cracker mixes.

I have no idea how authentic it is, but many Asian restaurants include slices of oranges as dessert (or in a bento box). So maybe you can include orange wedges as part of the appetizer?
