I've needed a new laptop forever. Right now I have nothing. Except my work laptop, which I dont usually bring home from work. I can, but I dont very often. I am used to PCs running Windows. But I have an iPhone and iPad and have been using both forever. Macs used to confuse the heck out of me, but now I think I could pick it up pretty easy since I know my iPhone so well (when i've used macs before it was before I had an iPhone).
I was looking at the Macbooks at Best Buy this weekend when they were having a sale. Sale's off now of course but next time I'd like to be prepared for what I want/need so I can make the purchase and be confident I am buying the right model.
Basically I would like to use it to edit/organize my photos. But those are just personal photos. I'm not a photographer or anything. I'd use it for web-surfing when its easier to use a laptop than an iPad (sometimes the Ipad is just funky when you are trying to do something online), backing up my iPhone/iPad via iTunes, maybe resume writing.
My problem is that I tend to want the BEST. and lets face it the best macbook is EXPENSIVE! I dont want to regret not getting something with more memory, or faster. I dont want to me buying another one in a few years.
I do know that I want the 13" model. is 8GB enough? Should I spring for 16? What about the hard drive? 256GB large enough?? I do have a lot of pictures of my kids, but most live on Google Photos, or an external hard drive that I have.
The woman at Best Buy touted the "Touch Bar"...but it seems rather pointless, right? or is that something that I am going to wish I bought? It looks like in order to get the QuadCore processor, you have to get TouchBar.
Lastly - i5 or i7? My husband will probably scoff at the i5. But to be honest he is probably going to think I'm nuts for getting a macbook to begin with. He is a PC guy.
I guess right now I am leaning toward Macbook Pro i5 16GB 256SSD but maybe I could drop to 8GB Ram and save myself some money.
Also, what do I need to know being a 1st time Mac user? I know I'll need to buy adapters for USBs. I really can only see myself using an external mouse, plugging in my external hard drive (can i use the one I already have or does i need to be special for Apple?), and charging my phone.
Thanks!
