Well I had a long chat with a Specialist on Apple.com today and he suggested that I go with a Macbook Air with 16GB Ram rather than a Macbook Pro. That would be about $1799 if I go for a 512GB hard drive. There is a refurbished on for $1529 right now.

I told him I'd probably have lots of web browsers open. I want to organize/edit photos, but I'm not using anything super fancy. But what if someday I want to try a better photo editing application? Could I run that on a Macbook Air? I'm guessing it would be ok.

It looks like I'd have to buy from Apple because I cant find one with 16GB or a larger hard drive on Best Buy or Costco.B uying from Costco would give a free 90 day return policy + free 2nd year warranty. But I'd have to get 8GB Ram + 256GB harddrive, which is less than what I wanted.

I guess now the refurbished one is looking good?

Why did he tell you to get the air? Do you need it to be very light? I much prefer my pro to my dad's air.

I dont know. I think because I said I would be doing web-browsing, maybe some photo editing/organizing but nothing professional, and then using Word or something.

I have already gone on to Apple.com and compared them and I am back to wanting the Pro. ha! I dont really need it to be super light because mostly I would use it at home. But maybe take on vacations with me. I wouldn't be bringing it back and forth to work everyday or anything like that.

I think the lighter, smaller machines are really popular at the moment, but I personally would go with the Pro as well. I just prefer the greater substance of a Pro size machine over an Air size machine.

Thanks. I think you're right. I read that they will probably come out with new Macbooks this summer. So maybe that will be a good time to buy a 2018 version. I'll also keep my eye open for a refurbished one that meets my specs.

My local apple store felt strongly that the air wasn’t worth the money unless light weight was of utmost concern. I do travel with mine and use it for work and don’t find the pro heavy at all especially compared to my prior work computers which were lenevos and dells.

At my work, we mainly use HP and now Dell. They are TEENY now. People can opt to get a "regular" size one, and a few do especially if they want a number pad on their keyboard, but most are going for the super small ones. They are like iPad sized.

There are people still have super sturdy looking HPs that look like they could survive falling out of a moving vehicle. Those that love them won't give them up even though they look like they are a million years old!

My work laptop is a Dell Latitude 5490. The screen is 14". Its smaller than my last one, but not teeny tiny. According to Dell it weighs at least 3.52 lbs which is more than the MacBook Pro would come in at. The overall dimensions of the Dell I have at work are a bit larger than the 13" macbook Pro.

Now I want one right away! But I feel like I should wait a month or so and see if there will be any discounts if a new version comes out. I guess I will get the TouchBar one since its a 2018. I dont feel like I need that feature though, but I dont want to buy something thats already been out for 2 years.

I have the air for my work laptop and Dh has the pro for his work cuz of heavy duty with R&D data he needs. If you don’t need the air for the weight cuz it is very light, then I would def go with the pro! It’s much better for your money you buy.

I bought a 2017 pro at Best Buy in December and have been happy with it. If Costco is offering an extended warranty I would do that. I had to have the battery replaced on mine already, but overall love the machine.
