Ds is very athletic and has great stamina. As I've posted, he recently stopped doing club soccer after 2 years and is very into track. He did track for the second year with his public middle school and recently started running with a club here. He saw an advertisement that there is going to be a marathon here in the fall and wanted to do it. I told him maybe the half-marathon and looked into it for him. We have a small local training group and I contacted them. He is training with them. The leader of the group told me that its unusual for a kid that age to run that long and it may not be a good idea. He didnt go into details, but told me to check with ds' coach and pediatrician. I am not really getting much of an answer from the coach. The pediatrician gave a mixed answer --
There is not a ton of research on this. Historically orthopedists recommend holding off on significant long distance runs until the growth plates are closed (ie completely thru puberty, haven’t grown taller in several months) ~ but clearly the Kenyans and Somalians are running earlier than that and they seem to do fine. I think if he can slowly build up to 10-11 miles without injury and is excited about it, sometime between 13-15 is a fine age to participate in a half marathon.
So what does the BBB wisdom say. Ds is determined that he can and will do this. I have no issues telling him no if that is what is best, but would rather do it sooner rather than later. He is currently running 6 miles so a little less than half.
