Default Help me dress my family for Tokyo photo shoot!

I'm a bit stumped. We take family photos every year and I love capturing vacation memories by doing a photo shoot (which we use for holiday cards). Anyhow, Tokyo is a city of contrasts and our photographer has suggested a path that includes both the Meiji Shrine (with gorgeous traditional Japanese architecture and lots of greenery) and the very colorful and urban Harujuku neighborhood.

So photos could have backgrounds like these:

    Harjuku.jpg gate.jpg

Given how busy the Harujuku neighborhood is, I wanted to make sure we don't fade into the background. Yet I also don't want to be so boldly colored that it detracts from the gorgeous peaceful tone of the Meiji Shrine area. Temps average in the high 70s when we're there, so we need to be in warm weather outfits.

DD1 (teen) loves marigold/mustard color so she's picked these 2 dresses and we have to figure out which one. Note that we already talked about her wearing the second dress pushed up on her shoulders so she can wear a regular bra. The long-sleeved dress has a subtle polka dot "print" in the chiffon (more like a texture). The second dress has white polka dots.

I wanted DD2 to have navy, white, and marigold, so we originally picked this option:

Oops, I can only post 5 images per post. See next post.

Since DD2's dress seems a bit busy, I also picked up a second option for her:

    striped dress.jpg

This seems almost too bold, though given the thick stripes.

I plan to wear a simple navy dress, this one from Boden:

And DH will wear a light blue dress shirt and navy pants (this is what he's most comfortable in, other than his college gear or his navy work scrubs so I don't bother trying to dress him in more casual dress shirts):

I'm thinking I need to find marigold/mustard necklace or something to accent my simple dress and complement DD1. I would love advice/opinions!

P.S. Total random observation, but I'm actually delighted to see most of the models are women/girls of color. How cool!

I think you will all look fabulous!
I like the chiffon dress, as it's subtle, and sets a mood, and the floral dress for your younger daughter. You dont need to be too matchy matchy, but maybe a necklace like this?

I love your choices, and I agree with the striped dress for Dd2 over the floral one.

No advice, but I saw this family's photos on the FB Japan travel group recently and loved the addition of the shade umbrella. They're used by most women there and are so pretty. I bought one when we were there last month and it's in most of my pictures.

Love the first yellow dress. The second is meh
i also think the floral will look good on DD2 since she is the only one wearing patterns in the photo. It will tie DD1s outfit to yours

What a cool idea!! My family would make a fuss at this so I’m a bit jealous

I love the second mustard dress, but I think the first will blend better with the other outfits.

    The bold stripes work.

    For you, some necklace ideas:

I love the first yellow dress (with sleeves) where is that from? Link please!

IMO I think both dresses you picked for your other dd are way too busy. also, black won't go with the blue you and dh are wearing. I'd look for something else for her, maybe a shade of blue with no pattern (or really subtle pattern).

Thanks, all! Wow, there are some conflicting opinions here. DD1 likes both dresses so we said we'd wait until they arrive and just try everything on. The first mustard dress is from H&M and her second dress is Boden.

Essence: great photo! I love the umbrella and there may be a practical use for it, too, since it's often rainy there in late September.

I picked the navy floral dress for DD2 originally because it ties in our other colors too. Otherwise 3 of us are in blue and 1 in mustard. DD2's floral dress has navy background and mustard, coral, and off-white highlights. We don't plan to wear anything coral, so that would just be an extra color. FYI, it's navy, not black, fauve01. No one is wearing black.

Thanks for the necklace ideas, too, globetrotter and solsister. It's hard, as I never wear costume jewelry so I am struggling a bit here. I think the flower theme necklaces just aren't my style. Maybe a simple multi-strand bead necklace like this? Would this work with my dress' neckline?
