What type of necklace with this dress/tunic?
Yet another question from the style challenged here!
I was in Old Navy yesterday, looking for some work tops. I happened to try on this dress/tunic, and was shocked that it actually fit and was somewhat flattering (I’m a different size on top/bottom, so dresses don’t usually fit me properly). I got it in black and burgundy:

I work in a very casual environment, so I imagine I’ll usually be wearing it with tights/leggings with tall boots or flats or booties. I’m often sitting on the floor with kids, or on tiny kindergarten chairs, so I will NOT be going bare legs like the models :-).
Most of my sweaters and tops are patterned, so I’ve never bothered with necklaces, and don’t really own any. Because these are so plain, I know they need something, just not sure what kind and what length? Long and dangly, wide and chunky, single strand, multi strand, pendant, no pendant...I really have no idea. I prefer silver to gold toned, if that matters. Not looking to spend a lot.
Would a scarf also be an option in the colder weather? Can I top it with a denim jacket in the Fall?
My work is near an Ardene, and a Banana Republic, but I’m open to any and all suggestions for necklaces to go with this.

I know this seems like such a basic question, but I REALLY am clueless when it comes to all things style related!!

I'd go for a chunkier or substantial necklace/layered or multistrand necklance, or patterned scarf. Check out accessory stores too, maybe The Bay/Smart Set etc, you can go cheaper with costume jewelry for sure. Even Walmart has some cute items. OP doesn't have Kohl's or I'd suggest that as they have great inexpensive jewelry, or Charming Charlies (although ours is out of business).
Yes to a denim or canvas jacket, especially fitted to nip in at the waist.

Old Navy Swing dresses are great! I recommend you hang dry because I have had them shrink and they are already a smidge on the short side IMO. I think I even bought tall and I am not particularly tall.
These are a great basic and work really well for layering.
Yes to scarves (infinity or blanket if you can handle the bulk....I can't really so I get the very lightweight infinity scarves and even sometimes cut the bulk out of them). Honestly, I have been happy with the super cheap ones from Walmart....they have cute patterns and at one point were 2 for $5! (I haven't looked this year in store and I don't see them online)

Yes to vests, fitted denim or drapey. I also really like scarf-style vests for this kind of dress since it's like a blank canvas. Like this: https://www.amazon.com/Triple9shop-W...8979083&sr=8-1
Yes to Jean Jackets for sure!
For jewelry I like a long tassel beaded necklace like this: https://www.amazon.com/BALIBALI-Neck...8979173&sr=8-3
Or a shorter chunky bib necklace like this: https://www.amazon.com/LIAO-Jewelry-...dDbGljaz10cnVl

Also I just recently started following the JustPosted blog and she does a lot of "8 ways to wear____" and similar. I really like how she shows multiple functions of each item and it has helped me look at my closet with more ideas.
This one might give you some ideas for your dresses: https://justpostedblog.com/2019/02/1...dress-12-ways/
and this: https://justpostedblog.com/2019/08/2...dress-12-ways/

I really like this blogger, she does a great job of making it simple.

Thanks so much for all the great suggestions!! Melaine, that blogger’s visuals really help.
I’m shying away from necklaces with tassels on the end- I feel like maybe they’ll draw the eye to my tummy .
Mom2binsd, unfortunately, Smart Set has closed up here. But it made me think to look at Reitmans. Maybe one of these options could work?

https://www.reitmans.com/en/2-rows-o...=false&start=1
https://www.reitmans.com/en/3-row-ch...=false&start=1
Or if anyone has any more specific suggestions from the reitmans website, I’m open to others!
Thanks again for all the advice and suggestions. Much appreciated!

I'd look for color and chunky necklaces like the blogger had on with the polka dot dress. Those thin metallic ones won't make an impact. I think a belt really looked good on the black dress the blogger showed, I felt the dress on her was a bit too big tbh and all that extra fabric was overwhelming.
Some scarves can be cute too, just avoid the ones the college girls wear that look like you're wearing a blanket.

Maybe check Fairweather, I was in one of them on my last trip home to Ottawa.
