I don't like laptops like you said if you want to pay for the new model. Using a regular computer you can replace some of the parts increasing the power. At home, I have a computer and a laptop. I use a regular computer for games, and use a laptop for work outside the home.

Everything depends on the needs of the device.

We've had an imac for 10yrs. The same imac. It's the family computer and sits on a desk in our family room. If we had a laptop it would still be the family computer and therefore still sitting on the desk. So, I think we get more bang for our buck out of a desktop model.

This is such a timely thread! DH and I have been a laptop-only household for more than 10 years (since shortly after DD1 was born as he stopped gaming and needing a full gaming desktop). We were just talking about handing down his 3 year old Macbook to DD1 (who's on an even older laptop for 3+ hours a day doing homework and photo editing). Yet DH likes his Macbook and doesn't think the new ones are a huge improvement. I'm thinking we buy her a desktop for homework and keep our laptops.

I had a laptop for work. Once I stopped working, I got an iMac. Love love it! I find I use my phone for portability and desktop when I want do edit pics/word processing, etc. My current iMac is 9 years old and is fine albeit a little slow. I am going to replace it in the new year and keep this one as a spare (possibly for kids as they get older, although it might be a brick by then). Sounds like you really don't need the laptop.
