Default What time to leave for our big drive tomorrow?

We’re traveling for Thanksgiving for the first time in our marriage (18 years!) and I don’t know what the wisdom says about what time to leave? We drive through a major city and on a major thoroughfare to another major city, about 6 hours away. What’s the prevailing thought about timing? I’m completely clueless!

Are you going through Vegas? Either leave after rush hour tomorrow or insanely early tomorrow.

I don't know the area but on the news it is predicted to be the 2nd busiest travel day for Thanksgiving ever. I'd leave as soon as humanely possible.

I was afraid of that! My kids do not sleep in the car and they aren’t morning people. My SIL recommended leaving around 5:30. Which is not terribly early for me but is for my kids (and will necessitate me getting up much earlier to be out the door on time!)

I’d leave tonight and stay in a hotel part way.

I would leave really early, like around 5:00. You want to be out of your current area before traffic builds up and hopefully be between cities during the major rush hour then at your destination by 11:00. Everyone can sleep then

Pack the car tonight, throw in some snacks, haul the kids out of bed at 5 am and send them straight to the car (go to the bathroom first obviously, but that is it). If they are starving give them a snack, then drive 2-3 hours before breakfast. Let them ride in their pajamas if they want to, or sleep in something like sweatpants and a T-shirt that is more like real clothes so they don’t have to change when they wake up.
