I would not give them a different name for donation purposes. I think the person who made the gift will feel bad that it was the wrong name and unusable which this whole thread is about not wanting to hurt the gift giver's feelings. Also, they could decide to make a second one in the right name.

I took the "wrong name" posts to be tongue in cheek.

TOTALLY. I do like the "undecided" approach. You could even lighten it up and say something like "we won't know the baby's name until we see him/her...it would probably be best to not put (Paint? Embroider? Cricut? Emboss??? C'mon we all really want a hint on what this is, LOL!!!) a name on it...we can't trust ourselves to not change our minds later!"

Weld? Chainsaw? Papier-mache? My imagination is running wild.

And I agree with PP, there's not much to be done other than hope she decides not to "craft" the gift.

I just figured the gift was a big homemade quilt to go on the wall, like over baby's crib.

    Like this, but maybe uglier?

I am picturing some big wooden piece, painted garishly with like zebra print and pink or leopard print and EMMA also painted onto the piece.

    Kinda like this:

I'm imagining something like this (apologies in advance to anyone who thinks this would be a great and beautiful gift):

Years ago I heard I very articulate hip, young person talk on a podcast about his crafting. (I mention it because I think we relegate crafts to certain subset of society, and he wasn’t the person you think of when you think crafts.) He was basically waxing poetically about making these shellacked things to put on your door out of bread loaves. He was saying how he knows they are ridiculous, but he loves making stuff like that and giving it to people. If the person actually likes it and displays it it’s a bonus, but not necessary. After that I viewed crafty things very differently. It’s really about the process for the person creating the craft. If possibly to get her the name do so. If it really isn’t being given out just say so, she'll probably make adjustments. Who knows, maybe decades from now it will be an object in a “craft a art” show.
