Here's one that hasn't been mentioned.... I hate to see TV commercials for drugs. I can only think that - every time I see one - that the commercials make the drugs cost far more than they should. Health care costs so much already, couldn't the millions of dollars spent on ads be better spent elsewhere?

And that is besides the point of people going to their Dr and asking for a specific drug. Those decisions should be made between patient and Dr. - not ad agencies.

Edited to add: I could go the rest of my life without another Viagra commercial! Or the new one about the funny shaped vegetables?

I can only speak to cancer drugs, but the short answer is that it's important for patients to be aware of options. Many people live in areas (rural, even suburban, etc) and see doctors who are not 100% versed in the latest options for a disease. A lot of times it's the patient that says "hey I saw this on TV...would that be an option for my cancer?" that jump-starts the doctor looking into it. If you are lucky to live near an ivory tower hospital with docs that specialize or even just a great community hospital with specialists, this is less of a worry as the docs are up to speed, generally. But the average community oncologist who has to manage patients with 30+ different kinds of cancer - there's no way to keep up with all that data.

The final decision should be made between patient and doctor of course. But ads are there for awareness. And yes, the more people who are aware of a drug, the more likely it'll be used and the more money that goes to pharma, a lot of which is piped back into creating resources for patients (nurse helplines, starter kits, etc) to support them during treatment, and a lot of which is piped back into research & development, which is critical because there is NO magic bullet for cancer...successful treatment depends on development of very specific therapies for very specific cancers, even down to the specific patient. And yes, of course pharma companies need the money to stay in business.

I'm not saying it's right or that there's not a better way...just offering one explanation!!

Oh yes!!! When direct-to-consumer drug advertising first started, I remember lots of discussions among physicians about how to deal with these specific requests (how much time in a busy appt can be spent educating patients about this while not shortchanging the real reason for the visit, etc).

These ads were bad enough when they were pushing fairly innocuous drugs for garden variety conditions. Now, I think many of them are completely irresponsible: "do you have this particular type of metastatic cancer, with this specific genetic variation? If so, ask your physician about our latest wonder drug..." (with the voiceover listing a bunch of serious side effects including death...). Hard enough to be dealing with a serious cancer without being made to feel like you should be constantly second-guessing your clinical team. Ugh!!

I dont care if you're flying around the world ..... your nightgown does NOT belong in public! PJs are bad enough .... nightgowns? No way. And I am a dedicated nightgown wearer. The ONLY time I wear PJs is if I'm sleeping in a bed not my own.

Even at Cub Scout Day Camp, staffed almost entirely by women, the t-shirt we are required to wear is a men's T? Can you imagine the outrage if it was reversed?
This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I can top your Cub Scout story. We did Girl Scout camp and the shirts were mens. The person who designed/chose them was a mom volunteer, so I didn't want to complain, but I was so pissed off. I did ask if there were girls/womens cuts/sizes available, I'd be happy to pay more, and was told no. Not everyone wants to wear a shapeless, square t-shirt with a stupid crew collar. Our PTA did a poll asking what t-shirts we wanted, they meant design, not style, but I wrote "women's cuts!" and they listened! They bought cute v-neck tees, and they were very popular.

I was in charge of some school merchandise sales this year and stocked the stand with a mix of women’s cut v-neck shirts plus traditional crewneck shirts. I was surprised by how many women opted for the crewneck ones. It was fascinating to be at the booth talking to people and hearing their thought processes. Most of them just bought huge sizes so they could swim in them. But, we sold enough of the women’s cut ones that we will keep offering them. I loathe a crewneck unisex shirt!

    I hate v-neck shirts. I like a women's cut, but not v-neck, so I will take a unisex crewneck over a women's cut v-neck.

My turn....People who volunteer to be on a non-profit board (that you know is a working board and non just a governing board) and then do zero work. Don't get pissed at me and tell me I'm trying to "control" things, when what I'm really doing is picking up the slack from what you aren't doing. I'd happily do less work if you did what you were supposed to.
