I don't have Consumer Reports but I just used my steam vac carpet cleaner today. It is over 10 years old and going strong. It is an older version of this one:

We have the second one listed, it is about 6 years old. I only use it intermittently on area rugs (we replaced the remaining wall to wall carpet with hard wood a few years ago), but it works really well.
