I'd just like a reality check as to what other parents do. 14 year old is virtual learning but getting on to some stuff I don't think he should be on when he's "working on homework.". Do you restrict what your teen does on the internet at all?

Once he was in high school, none, but he knew we’d do spot checks whenever we wanted. Having his passwords was a requirement. I rarely looked.

We don’t restrict other than locking down devices as much as possible. But we know he has seen porn and we have had discussions about it. For school he has a school iPad that is locked down as well as a very strict honor code. We only allow the school iPad in his room on his virtual days and until all homework is complete. I take his personal iPad and other devices before bed and they are kept downstairs until homework is finished the next day. He also has a gaming computer and it is set up in the playroom, not in his room.
We used to not allow any devices in their bedrooms but now they need them for school & homework. But having a separate device for that purpose only is helpful. So basically we try to minimize the opportunities he has to be on the internet behind a closed door with no one around. He is 13.
For that age, we turn off the internet at bedtime on their gaming system and they leave their phones downstairs to charge (no phones in bedrooms). they were allowed to have phones over the summer though..
None. On her phone I do turn off everything at 10:00 other than texting, music, and school stuff

DS1 (7/09)
DS2 (8/13)
None. Well no social media is allowed.

Kids age DS 14 (freshman) and DD 17 (senior) . No restrictions, I have access to phones and am friends on their social media (snapchat) so I can see what they post publicly (which isn't much). Occasionally will do a little looking at the 14 yr olds, DD is a senior and off to college soon, knows that anyone can search for her online and is very cautious.
Open dialog continuously about social media and what is on the internet.
For both, their sports teams (travel) have group chats and use things like what's app etc.
I have learned that I have a much different view on some things like this, than the majority of the bbb parents and I'm ok with that. Within our friend group my take is pretty much similar.
It really varies from each family and each child. Some kids can handle it, some can't.

We learned the hard way that you can be tech savvy and absolutely sure you know what's going on... and be absolutely wrong. Even the most responsible kid can end up scraping the bottom of the internet and finding predators. There are ways around filters (Circle)--keeping a phone off wifi, for example--and the school devices do not lock down some sites that they should. DD is our only kid with a phone so far, but is not allowed upstairs, and we took Safari off of it completely. She has an iPad that she uses for reading and music at night. She does have instagram, but her audience is limited, and that's the only social media she has. DH is logged into her account on his phone, so he sees everything. We've learned a lot in the past year.
