Default Any books/websites that you recommend to start a backyard chicken flock/coop?

Are there any books or websites that you recommend for a person who wants to start a home chicken flock?

I'd love to have my own chicken coop someday!!

    Thanks!!

Backyard Chickens is a pretty good website and forum, https://www.backyardchickens.com/

Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens is a good book that covers a lot of topics: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/16121293...A986QS58CY579W

I follow the Chicken Chicken on Facebook (for punny jokes) and she seems to post a lot of info relevant to backyard chickens.

These were going to be my exact recommendations. It isn’t rocket science by any means. The main thing is chickens need more space than you might think, and you should plan for more than the number you anticipate wanting (unless your town has a strict limit that will keep your flock in check.)

Thank you for the great suggestions!

I can't have chickens in my current house/neighborhood as we have an HOA that won't allow it. But someday, I will. I won't be in
this house forever. I'll downsize as soon as kids are in college. I'd love to get a house in the country.

Contact your local Extension Agent--they are usually at the County level or check out your state's agricultural college website--they often have lots of good info. We had so many people getting them that the city put out pamphlets on how to do it correctly/cut down on the rat population.

Oh, yeah, rats flock to chicken feed. You really have to dig down several feet and put in fine mesh wire to keep the rats out of the coop. They might even eat young chicks IF the hen is off of them long enough but I doubt that happens much but I don't know.
