    Default Life Skills

What skills do you think kids should know how to do independently by the time they move out of the house? Here’s my list so far.

    Household Management
    -cook
-meal planning. How to make the most of the ingredients and reuse them in other recipes for the week.
    -clean especially a bathroom
    -do laundry
    -how to sew a button
-sort through their mail/not sign up for every credit card they receive in the mail

    Money Management
    -budget money
    -balance a checkbook
    -make payments online
    -how to save money
    -basic of investing money

    Other Life Skills
-drive a car. How to parallel park.
-make an appointment (doctor/dentist) or reservation (flight)
-cursive handwriting. At least be able to write and read cursive handwriting.
    -read a map/plan a road trip
-how to tip at a restaurant
-how to handle a minor car accident like a fender bender.
    -how to write an email
-how to write a thank you card
-how to pick out an outfit
-take care of their mental health
    -how to keep passwords safe
-not buy everything they see advertised or when they shop at a store. Stick to their list.

    Good list!

I'd also add this to "how to drive" because if you don't take care of your car, you're not going anywhere:

    • How to change windshield wiper blades
    • How/where to refill your washer fluid's reservoir
    • How to check your oil
    • When to change your oil (or when you should take it in for a change if you don't learn how to change it yourself)
    • How to change a tire (or who to call when you need help)
    • How to check air pressure in your tires
    • How often you need to have your car inspected
    • How to renew car registration
    • How often you need to pay for your car insurance
    • Where to keep your important car documents (current insurance card, registration, etc)

How to pump gas in the car.

Our kids may never have a checkbook so they may as well not learn to balance one. We write so few checks we don't even balance it anymore.
Dealing with emergencies- when to call/how/what to say to 911, what to do in a power outage, earthquake, etc.
    Grocery shopping and price comparisons
    Handshakes in business
Keeping important papers organized for doing taxes, or other important things like buying a house or car

I just bought the book How To Be A Person for DD and it covers a lot of the things mentioned above.

    - what mail can go into the recycle bin, what needs to be filed, what needs to be shredded/burned
    - self defense and awareness of surroundings
    - home security (locking up, alarm system and basic security like clearing the area around the doors, ect)

Medical/dental history of themselves and how to fill out medical forms - particularly if allergies or ongoing medical issue

How to read food labels and basic nutrition

How to stock a basic medical cabinet

Use basic hand tools - hang a picture, change smoke alarm batteries, use a plunger to unclog a toilet, oil a door hinge

Very timely. Just got back from DD’s “well child”
where she also needed forms signed. In addition to what others have said:

    * How to check in at a doctor’s office, including having ID and insurance card and filling out the registration questionnaire

    * How to ask questions, get forms signed etc.

She has to go back for vaccinations as she’s in between dose one and two of COVID vaccine. The pediatrician’s office had to look up if I could sign a release for her to do without me there. (Good news - yes) They said most accompany their kids and do paperwork through at least high school if not college

    * How to navigate public transportation - find the right gate, get through security etc.

Reading any paperwork thoroughly and understanding that your signature is legally binding and can not be revoked if you change your mind.

Asking for help- knowing when to and how to do it
How to use tools and the types of tools- hammer vs rubber mallet, types of screwdrivers
how to paint a room- supplies needed, tape, remove light switch covers, spackle, rollers and brushes, proper clean up, drop cloths
how to assemble furniture/follow directions (with the exception of hand me downs, most of us go through a phase of life/stay in a phase of life where furniture needs to be assembled); start with something small like a shoe rack to learn
