Default High School Graduation gift idea needed...

    Hi,

We have a good family friend graduating from high school this week and headed off to college in the Fall. Living far away, it's tough. I really want to send him a gift. Any suggestions?

The only idea that I have is a Yeti Travel Mug...

Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I would send cash or a general gift card. College kids need so many things and it’s hard to know specific needs from far away. I approach gift giving from a practical standpoint. I would rather know they used it rather than hope it fit the bill.

Agree. My son will be flying to his school so taking very little with him. I've told people cash and gift cards.

I agree with the gc idea unless you already know what would be useful to that specific person; otherwise its hard to know what they have, still need, etc. If you have contact with his parents or any one else who could make specific suggestions I would try that first. I know you come to the BBB for concrete ideas, not go ask someone else, but only saying it in this case as I think it does help to talk to someone who has direct knowledge of what is wanted/needed. I did have a couple of people ask me what dd would like for her graduation and I appreciate it. My dd would always be happy with gcs, but it is nice to open presents too as long as they are things she can make use of or wants.

I think the Yeti idea is good. With a gift receipt, just in case.

    Hi All,

I decided to just do a Starbucks card. There is one on campus! He can load it onto his phone and not have to carry anything.

Thank you all. I definitely needed the reminder that kids do not need more STUFF .

Did you already do it? Asking because the kids’ meal plans cover that on our campus. Not that it’s a wise use of meal plan money but I know mine used it.

Even if turns out it’s on the meal plan, he can use the GC off-campus. It’s a nice treat to have while exploring the area or taking an off-campus study break.

I agree with the GC idea. I have a senior, and asked what she would like. She and her roommate have divided up the big purchases (fridge/microwave), Dd has a smaller keurig already, and they each want their own fans, even though there will be AC.

DD must have 15 types of Stainless mugs etc as do many of her friends. We are going to give Starbucks GC to most of her friends, most campus's have them nearby and ours do not include it on the meal plan. Seems like every kid we know loves their SB. But I think a GC to any local business (like around here Jimmy Johns) is appreciated, as kids will still order food even with their meal plan. Also any store like Target or Bed Bath and Beyond is probably a safe bet as well or VISA.

For other people looking for gift ideas I just remembered this phone key and ID holder that someone posted last year that seemed like a great idea! We're going to a graduation party for DS1 and his 7 friends and I just bought one for each friend since they sell them in either a 2 or 3 pack. It ends up being a great gift at less than $7 a person! DS already can't remember to take his ID anywhere he goes!
