Covid measures in school 21/22

Interesting to hear about the testing done on schools, I don’t think any schools around here did that last year and most were open all year (with masking, distancing, and contact tracing in place). We are still about a month out from school starting, but as of now the districts here are all saying optional masks and mostly back to normal school this year. Waiting to see if that changes with the news and recommendations put out this week.

We had optional weekly Pooled testing. It mostly worked well. We didnt have a set time so sometimes kids were coming back 10min late from recess or going 5 min late etc. It was frustrating as staff b/c you really couldnt plan but it otherwise was fine. In relationship to the rest of last year, this was minor.

In response to the new CDC guidance, our governor has mandated masking for K-12. Not sure about testing yet, but I am thankful for masking.

I am wanting to know if this will include sports. We have a coach already pushing to know if ds will participate (he did not last year), and I want more info.

We don't have a statewide mandate, but our district is requiring masks for K-12. For high sports sports, masks are not required, although I'm sure the school board will revisit if necessary.

Now that LAUSD has announced that I wonder if any other SoCal districts will follow along.

I am sure Long Beach Unified (which is the 5th largest district in the state) will be the next to announce they will do it.

Our high school did saliva testing weekly. Definitely some issues but it was fine.

Our elementary and middle school did saliva testing as that seemed easier for the younger kids and nasal swabs for high school.

In Mass, DESE guidance is that under grade 6 should be masked, grade 7 and above masked only if unvaccinated. No masks outdoors.

Schools are "highly encouraged" to develop a testing plan, but not a whole lot of detail on that would look like.

I would be extremely surprised if our superintendent deviated from the DESE guidelines at all.

Still hoping for that 5-11 vaccine soon, but happy we are at least not going round and round about zoom school again.

Our kids went hybrid for a lot of the year last year. My 3rd grader 2 days/week until April, then 5 days a week. My first grader got to go 2 days a week til November, then 4 days/week until April, then 5 days/week. Some cases in the small, ~400 child K-5 school but never a ton. No quarantines. Remote learning was miserable, though no fault of anyone.

There will still be risk in the fall. But hopefully we will pull through ok.
